Hw- 30 Theorizing Cool

What is the point of being born, if later on we find emptiness? I guess being an evolved human being is the worst thing to become. Life is a difficult topic to fully understand and planning it is even harder. In life, nothing always goes the way we ourselves want it to go. Why? Well because nothing is perfect, nothing in life is perfect even if we subconsciously believe it is. Our own personal lives hinder our own interpretation of what "Life" is because no two people are the same, so not everyone has the same motive. Now it is possible for people to have similar motives but how we get to it, is completely on our own. Is that how we fill emptiness then? Do we fill emptiness with our own individual quest or goal? I believe it is, and there are many ways of doing so.

The first way many of us seek to fill emptiness, is finding an answer to it. In many ways finding the answer to our emptiness could be on a superficial level of the popular "Coolness." We fill this void of emptiness with what being cool is, such as; being the rebel, the wealthiest, most popular, lots of friends, etc. With all these different criteria of cool, then that void of emptiness should be filled. Its many of the roles in society we try to be to fit in with every ones needs. This is where I believe being the conformist is one ultimate way of filling the empty and finding a meaning. Now there are downsides to becoming a full-on conformist, people will believe you are fake. People will categorize you as fake for being a conformist because you, yourself does not have a self of your own. In the "cool" societies this looked down upon because you do not bring fourth a unique and individual trait, which in the cool societies everyone wants to duplicate. So if you would like to conform, do it in a moderate fashion because almost everyone is.

Another way I look at how we fill emptiness is to be everywhere, with everyone, doing everything. The answer to that is creating something everyone can relate too. Heroes are great examples of these characteristics because everyone idolizes them. Heroes are the type of people that are perfect and nothing could be wrong with them because everyone likes him/her. For example in the 1960's when blacks were segregated from whites, Martin Luther King, a famous black activist stood up for what he and millions of other black males and females believed was right. In the black culture, they looked to Martin Luther King as a hero for ending segregation. Not all would agree, but majority would believe and even for Hitler, his near-accomplishment of taking over the world in the 1940's might of been heroic in the eyes of most Germans. Both these two individuals created a movement that captured the eyes of many, which would categorize them under heroic(depending on your belief). So I feel that they had filled most of their emptiness.

My final thought on figuring out or understanding emptiness and filling it is, what if we just don't care. If we did not care about having a meaning or filling an emptiness would we be better off? Is it possible to not care about it all? Basically just questioning life as a whole would to just stop, and finding an answer to it has deceased. Then how would our society be like?

Hw-31 Exploring Methods

Matthew-

Are there ever situations where you feel the need to make yourself bigger than another person?
"yeah, times where I feel awkward or I have to prove a point."
How does that person feel when your the bigger person?
"I guess sometimes there are two types of people who sometimes accept it or then some people who take it as an offense.  But it always go back to the idea that nobody is always going to like you."
Why is that?  How come people aren't going to like you?
"umm.. Sometimes people won't understand me, or for better words they can't relate.  And what is a relationship if they can't relate which is a reason why someone would not like me."

For me-

For me,  I think I'm more of a conformist because of the many identities I put up front, to fit in with the many different social scenes.  I feel that this role of being the conformist is valid in the cool society because there are many different criteria's that cool requires, and by being one identity won't really get you far in the cool scene.

Hw-29 Merchants of Cool

In "Merchants of Cool" it showed how corporations use teenagers as their source of money making machines. It was interesting to see how they got to the teenagers to find out what the "cool" was, and how oblivious the teens were to the manipulation of the companies.

One of the manipulating techniques that worked really well were the cool hunters. The cool hunters were the people who sought out to find the dominant teenagers who led trends and were unique. When these people photographed the unique and trend setting individuals (the teens), it made them seem like they were special, or meaningful. At least that's how I think they felt because they did not really question it. Little did these oblivious teens know, was that they were suckers to huge corporation stealing their individuality and spreading it everywhere. So now, that person's style was no longer unique.

Another method that companies used were focus groups that had meetings with teens to find out what the "new cool" on the street was. The teens were paid to be in these focus groups made by the companies and in the meetings they are asked questions such as: "What type of music is cool? Whats the most favorite brand of clothing to wear? etc." This gave the teens the sort of power to guide where companies should be looking to spread their business and in what type of style that was "cool" of course.

Probably the most effective of its time and risky but succeeded was the Sprite corporation because they broke the boundary of trying to sell cool but basically become it. It was interesting because of that time, Hip-hop was getting popular and cool, and every teen was into it. The Sprite corporation acknowledged the fact of "coolness" that trailed it and they went along with it. Sprites attempt to become cool scored them big and all the teens associated themselves with the Sprite drink because it affiliated with the Hip-hop scene.

Hw- 28 Informal Research

Fenichel, Michael "What is cool?" (What's Hot? What's Not?)
http://www.fenichel.com/Cool.shtml

This article articulated their definition of "cool" and how teens deal with it daily. It talked about how self esteem, peer pressure, hormones and social experiences shape the way cool is showered upon us. What I thought was pretty interesting about what the author said about self esteem is, what really makes someone cool? Most of it comes across understanding what one is really good at it and sticking with it. In some other cases self esteem is making grades, points, or money.

I thought this article was dead on about what "cool" means in our adolescent lives because we are affected by so much in societies that portray a different thing every day or week or month. But this obsession with "you" is probably a main characteristic of just being cool because what is really you in a society that has criteria of being a "cool you."

Who, Alan "How to be Cool."
http://alanwho.com/ask/how-to-be-cool/

The author of this article gave more of a list then an explanation of being "cool" which is pretty interesting because how does he already know that people think he's cool. Anyway, in the article he gives out these tips/advice on how you could structure yourself around cool by doing it in his interpretation of cool. What I thought was interesting about this article was at the end when he explains that (once again the theme of being you arises) being you is your best teacher. So how come he's teaching people how to be them? What if the things he listed on how to be cool are the total opposites of what other peoples interpretations of cool are? Very tricky situation and that's why I believe that finding the answer to cool is infinite and there are no real correct answers to it. For example, his fifth suggestion of how to be cool is basically not wear brand name clothes, be your own brand. There are many people who will disagree with this because in our society, wearing brand name clothing that are pretty expensive, is pretty damn cool.

http://www.askmen.com/money/how_to_250/252_how_to.html

Like the second article, this one gave their own personal tips of how to be cool. In comparison to the second article, this one gave more of how to "bag" women and maintain your coolness level. I also felt it gave an impression of the stereotypical cool for example their tip on the type of women you should date or have. The header was "Have a nice girlfriend(preferably good looking)", and from their on it went on about how if you have a hot girlfriend you look really cool.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnuK0ka9Ho8

In this video, Russel Simmons, explains what cool is with his own analogy of the cool guy. The type of cool guy he desrcibed was more of the "real-cool" guy because of the calm qaulities that he had. For instence, that type of guy goes for his goal without "frustration, anxienty and seperation from power."

Although I'm not sure why Simmons brought meditation into context, which he brings up a lot after the first minute of the video, but he believes that meditating brings you bliss, which is pretty cool.

Hw-25 Comments on Short Stories

Part 1:

Chris,

I enjoyed your story because I felt it represented the stereotypical cool person as the lame person compared to the father who was the "real cool" person.

Throughout your story you build the apparent "real cool" person as someone who doesn't have enough time for himself, but makes time for the more important personal things in life. The stereotypical cool guy was only showed as a flashy guy but did not show much appreciation towards the kids.

At the very end you completed your story to question what is really cool, the guy with the motorcycle? Or the one who cares and spends most of his time with his kids.

Hi Yurelis,
Your story I felt represented criteria of how teenagers become cool. I feel this way because in your story, you explained how the new girl gained her friends by being the supposed "bad ass" with teachers disrespecting them and then having new things that are popular, such as the Blackberry phone.

In the end though, the materialistic criteria of becoming the cool teenager is shutdown because the new girl does not gain new friends.

I look forward to your future blogs about your interpretation of cool and how you explain it.

Hi Kiana,

Your story reminded me of how our class talked about conformity. In your story you wrote about how the teen tried to be cool in many different ways, but still could not get in on the "in-crowd." In our society, we also try be unique in our own special way, but it always ends up as something someone else has, but just a little different. In your story, your character struggles with this.

I look forward to reading future blogs about the criteria and constant conformity of "cool" that you expressed in this blog.

What up C-Sinnot,

haha, I really enjoyed the humor and almost everyday scenarios in your short story. The characters, the materials and the situations that happen all in this short story get straight to the point of the "stereotypical cool guy" the doosh-bag.
"Hey man you know what else is foul?" Tom looked confused. "Sticking your nose in other peoples business." Such a doosh-bag statement.

I look forward to more humorous blogs that also explain your interpretation of "cool."

Hey Chloe,

I think you have a very interesting and real-like story that throws out a theme of honesty that is represented in a cool manner.

What I took from your story was a person who represented their "coolness" through avoiding others and not giving a damn about others that surrounded her. Almost like saying, better then everyone. I also think your use of materialistic attributes such as the faux leather, chunky boots and black eyeliner built your character as the kind of person "who knows their cool, but you should already know that."

I can't wait for more interesting and honest interpretation of cool you are going to express in the future.

Part 2:

In the Short stories that I have read and commented on, most of them have the appear-cool being shutdown by real-cool. It's a pattern that comes up a lot in each story and even mine because I think in our society we shoot for the more settle and underdog type of people as the "chill or cool people" of our society. To those of the appear-cool personalities, most of us I think we cannot relate too so we end up siding more with the "real-cools."

Popular elements of cool that arise in these short stories are the materialistic things that makes someone cool. For example in Chris and Chloe's story, they both describe their appear-cool characters with some sort of wealth and the leather jacket (bad ass) look. As for the "real-cool" people, the underdog's, there's more honesty and commitment to them which makes them the cool.

Short Story Hw- 24

Dean walked into his class late with a relaxed walk with his chest and chin directed up. His eyes focused the other end of the class avoiding any other eyes. In the midst of a whole class discussion, Dean made his way slowly to his seat giving everyone handshakes and head nods. The teacher eyeing every movement Dean made, he felt uneasy. Annoyed by Dean's slow movement, the teacher abruptly spoke out;
"Dean, make your way to your seat in a timely fashion, your late."
Dean quickly replied.
"I'm already at my seat; Marks."
Dean sat in his seat, focused his attention to every one's faces which focused directly on him.
"What the fuck are you looking at bitches? Direct your eyes somewhere else faggots."
"Dean leave my class right now! I'll meet you out there."
Dean noisily got up, shoved his way through every seat that past him and violently opened and slammed it after. Mr. Marks followed.
"Dean, I'm done with you, There are camera's in my room. Your mom is gonna' love seeing that video; punk."
(murmurs) "fuck."

Hw 23 Cool Unit

Cool, what does it mean and I'm not talking about the literal sense. How do you define a person as cool? What are the exact criteria of becoming cool? All questions to understand teenage popularity. And even popularity should have differences on being cool.

I believe the main parts of being cool, is being consistent. Being consistent comes with conformity, which in our society is very popular. Constant conformity has happened for many generations and has changed overtime because of the "coolness" it acquired. Constant conformity is still very popular to this day because of how our society changes. For example the movement from very baggy jeans, to a more fitted attitude. Our generation of music has also changed especially, the very popular and overdue Auto tune. Before our society was completely into robotic singing voices, we were into great singers. Singers like Bill Withers, Tina Turner, Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd etc. But now that generation of music is dying out, and to now, listening to it is not considered cool. What is considered cool in our generation is now like Kanye West singing through auto tune or very pop like music such as Britney Spears.

There are other parts of becoming cool not solely on just being consistent but also like how you build your image. What I mean by building an image is more of how you represent yourself, either through lies or truth's. I think most of the image people build today, like such celebrities are through lies; for example the rap artist, Lil Wayne builds his image through toughness by exaggerating his street life. To even a more extended version of building images, "...history is made out of [popular] liars" (CallofDutyModernWarfare2). War between man, only one man can win, so only one truth comes through and not the other side, so the whole truth isn't told. So that one man's truth becomes popular and everyone believes it, which I think is a criteria of being cool.

I think also believability has a lot to due with how to become cool. If noone was able to trust or believe what one told them, why does it matter to listen to that person? Trust built in relationships builds you an image of where people can trust, and when your trusted enough, I feel it should be considered as 'cool.'

One wandering question I have for 'Cool' is; can there be only one exact answer for it? and chill, not the literal sense either.
For you smart asses, here's the definition of the literal sense:
Neither warm nor very cold; moderately cold: fresh, cool water; a cool autumn evening

Art Project

The art I created reflects as a mirror to society because it shows the common popularity's that arise in teenage minds or even adults. For example the most popular social networks are drawn in to the anonymous person's mind to represent that majority of the time, teenagers or even adults only think about what new digital friend he/she has made.

The art I drew makes me think about how much time daily I spend using digital technology and how much it has taken over my thoughts. This also makes me think about how many other individuals like me, have the same exact thoughts about the digital age taking over.

The most interesting aspect my art provided is the message of reading text or people are non existent when digital representations have taken over the body and mind. I felt a need to express this issue in a drawn picture because of the popularity digital technology has grown into our society and with great success too. And with great success comes great heartache. And the heartache is reality.

Digital Technology Paper

EQ: How does digital technology better society?

Introduction:
In our generations, we have come to appreciate the digital devices that have come up making life easier. In our past, the movement and connection between different countries, and or even people had taken a long time to connect with each other because of the lack in advance digital devices. For example, if Paul Revere, the American, most famous for his night-time alerts of the British movement, could have simply been easier if he made a phone call, but that was in the late 1700's. Today, I find myself embracing the cool, advance digital devices that are being made to make things quick and easy. The convenience of digital technology has provided easier connection and communication with society due to Cell phones, TV and Social Networks.

Argument 1:
Our society has always relied on cell phones to quickly connect ourselves with people from long distances. I have a Cell phone and I use it almost everyday, because I do not have to struggle throughout the day trying to contact someone. Cell phones, which was first invented in 1973 by Dr. Martin Cooper changed the communication industry for good. Because of his development of the first cell phone, today we have the opportunity to commit to either job interviews or simply contact an old friend. People claim that cell phones have taken over lives and that because of that, we are not able to be aware of reality because we are casually "yapping" away. That's just one negative, but what about the many possible positives? Mary E., A mobile cell phone user, has praised the invention of cell phones because of the possible and threatening tragedy that could of happen to her granddaughter. "… three men tried to kidnap my 14 year old granddaughter. A motorist who was passing by, saw the struggle, she stopped, blew her car horn, and said she was calling 911 on her cell phone; my granddaughter was able to escape and ran home." (Mary E.) In emergency, a cell phone dialed to 911 was able to save Mary E.'s granddaughter, which conveniently caused the three men to allow the victim to run away. Now imagine if cell phones weren't around and 911 could not be dialed, Mary E. would probably not have been to able to see her granddaughter get away. Emergency phone calls are definitely convenient when one is in harms way, or in trouble because then it is possible for people to become saved, in this case Mary's granddaughter. Not only are cell phones conveniently great in emergency, but if worst comes to happen to someone, "Cell phones also have a great tracking device on them. It is a very important service to have…it can be used to tract missing or lost persons." (Mary E.) Cell phones can be used in many different ways positively that everyone seems to miss out on. They are fooled because of the little problems such as texting which distracts people from reality.

Cell phones you can also consider has removed the use of writing and sending letters. Before cell phones, writing letters to people were popular because it was a way to contact someone without leaving your home. Letters were nice, but took to long to reach the other person, and who knew if your letter even made it to that person. With cell phones, this shortened that time by a lot. Cell phones can contact another cell phone within 5-30 seconds, a letter could take up to 1 to whenever amount of days it takes to reach the next person. Cell phones has conveniently helped our society today by making communication with others faster and easier than it was in the past.

Argument 2:
Television plays a huge part in society that has conveniently helped the world see what happens in other parts of the world we did not of. TV, a world-wide phenomenon, since 1934, has been able to keep us in contact nationally and internationally with interesting topics because of shows like "CNN" or "NBC" because they provide coverage to issues we alone my not of heard of. People believe that television has very strong negative attributes, it causes disembodiment with kids and adults because we are so engaged with what is on screen. But what about books? Books can also be considered as a threat because that too can cause disembodiment because our minds are focused on reading and understanding the text. Well, then people might argue back, that when we read books, we are also using our brain and in television you do not. I beg to disagree.

In "Everything Bad is Good for you", by Steven Johnson he brought up good points about how digital technology is good for us that not many people like to argue. He explained how television shows complexity that began in the 80's have helped us understand even more complex shows present day. Mostly he talked about multithreading which is how TV shows with complex narrative stories kept people watching, and TV shows with single-plot narrative stories held viewers for a short while. "…the first screening of Hill Street [(a complex narrative show)] pilot in may 1980 brought complaints from viewers that the show was too complicated. Fast forward twenty years and shows like The Sopranos engage their audience with narratives that make Hill Street look like Three's Company."(Everything Bad is Good for you, Johnson) Conveniently without us ever really realizing it, people have become more opened and I think smarter because after two decades of exposure with complex narrative shows we the capacity to understand complex plots. This has bettered our society because multithreaded dramas are present in books and televisions and because of our exposure to it in the 80's to now, we've learned how to understand it.

Argument 3:
Since 1985, the first online social network made, has kept people in contact with others without sending a letter or calling them. It has been used as the quickest and easiest way to contact a person and conveniently, one can now get it in on their cell phone too. Social Networks are built on online communities by providing a system to find people who you just met or someone you met years ago. I believe social networks have made a positive change in society because I believe it has connected us more to the people we are surrounded by. "…the Internet has now allowed this circle of friends and colleagues to span the entire globe, and provided people are careful to use the Internet in moderation and in balance, these social networks will only serve to enhance human relationships, and to benefit society…"(LoveToKnow corp.) Now if only people could get past the fact that, yes social networks can lead to massive amount of time on the computer, but it is only to build relationships outside.

Opposing Viewpoints:
Although digital devices have conveniently made a difference in society, people also argue, that it has also made us lazy. Like television and social networks, it has created a massive amount of time consumed by sitting down and detachment from society. Social Networks has "…hurt society is through the obsession factor. This kind of excessive computer use can quickly lead to a dysfunctional lifestyle where other important daily activities, such as exercise, maintaining healthy sleeping and eating habits, and spending time with family and friends, are almost completely ignored."(LoveToKnow corp.) This is all based upon the strength of mind on the human being not being able to control oneself, for a fact I know myself to be on social networks for quite amount of time, but I have control over myself so I think it really depends on the person. Even though all that was described as a side effect of social networking was negative, study shows "…that most children who spent time conducting computer-based activities spent no less time on activities such as reading, sports or outside play than children without home computers."(LoveToKnow corp.) So what does that say about social networks, it cannot be all negative.

Television, another culprit of negatively impacting society is represented by mass studies of how it makes us lazy and detaches us from reality. One of the most main and common argument for it is; it stops us from doing "…fruitful and healthy activities like exercise or reading."(Buzzle.com) I always disagree with statements like this, but some of it is true because mass studies exemplify the fact that people become lazy. One thing I do not understand is, why can't reading be put in the same category as Television? In reading, we sit in one spot and we focus our brains in one general area, and we make sense of the text we read. Same way with television. But I believe television has helped us better understand hard text because of the constant exposure to multithreading, which is conveniently provided by TV programs, for example E.R. or 24.

Conclusion:
But do you really argue convenience with laziness? I guess. Making something quick and easier in some people's eyes is considered lazy. But why challenge yourself and make something harder if there is an easy way out of it. In my eyes, I think it is brilliant that someone invented a phone, because then I would not have to wait for them to send a letter. Just dial their phone number. I think it is brilliant that they invented social networks, now I do not have to dial, I just type. All making things, easier and quicker. Digital devices have bettered our society because of today's technology which conveniently makes things much quicker and easier.

But I believe television has helped us better understand hard text because of the constant exposure to multithreading, which is conveniently provided by TV programs, for example E.R. or 24.

Mini Exhibition Rough Draft

In our generations, we have come to appreciate the digital advances that has come up making life easier. In our past, movement and connection between different countries, and or even people had taken a long time to connect we each other. Today, the convenience of digital technology has provided easier connection with the world due to Cell phones, Tv and Social Networks.

Our society has always relied on cell phones to quickly connect ourselves with people from long distances. I have a Cell phone and I use it almost everyday, because I do not have to struggle throughout the day trying to contact someone.

Television plays a huge part in society that has conveniently helped the world see what happens in other parts of the world we did not of. Tv, a world-wide phenomenon, since 1934, has been able to keep us in contact national and international because of shows like "CNN" or "NBC" because they provide coverage to issues we alone my not of heard of.

Since 1985, the first online social network which has made, kept people in contact with other without sending a letter or calling them. It has been used as the quickest and easiest way to contact a person and conveniently you can now get in on your cell phone too.

Although digital devices have conveniently made a difference in society, people also argue, that it has also made us lazy. But do you really argue convenience with laziness? I guess. Making something quick and easier in some people's eyes is considered lazy. But why challenge yourself and make something harder if there is an easy way out of it. I think it is brilliant that they invented social networks, now I do not have to dial, I just type. All making things, easier and quicker.

Digital devices have bettered our society because of today's technology which conveniently makes things much quicker and easier.

Comment to Digital Unit Outline's

Kiana,

I really like your creative thesis #3 because you have more of a "show don't tell" thesis which draws a reader in more. Examples you could use to show addiction was our experiments we did and peoples reaction to it. That could show people's understanding of how much they either appreciate or dislike digital technology.

you could also talk about social networks and how that is addicting because it keeps people in contact with each mother faster then it is to make a phone call or send a letter. That makes us lazy, so thats a negative.

You could talk about "Feed" and the detachment the teens felt after losing their feed.

I look forward to seeing what thesis you end up choosing, but I think your 3rd thesis would be an excellent paper to write and expand about.

Digital Unit Mini-Exhibition Outline

Eq: How has digital technology better society?

Thesis: The digital technology today has bettered our society for the better because it is convenient due to cell phones, Tv and social networks.

Argument 1: Social Networking

Digital technology has become so convenient to our present society because of the social networking. Social networking has been able to keep people in contact with others who they haven't seen in a longtime, or prepare themselves to meet each other the following day.

Argument 2: Tv

Digital technology has better our society because of Tv. Tv has helped us better understand complex narrative stories-(use the Everything bad is good for you)

Argument 3: Cell Phones

Digital technology has conveniently helped our society through shortening and giving us shortcuts communicating with other people in long distances.

Conclusion: Digital technology has definitely better our society even though many argue that it has been for the worse, but overall when we look at it, digital devices we've used has made things easier.

Kiana,

I agree with your post that that Telivision and Videogames do make us a smarter person even though in our society people look at it in a different eye. They look at as a total negative because of the outer body experience that most people endure. Even though that could happen, it doesn't mean we're not learning, we're just more foucused on what we're watching than anything else. But then they would argue that we would be oblivious to the world! Hell no, they have educational shows about the world, we could be watching that shit. And Books! Books should be counted in as they same proposed threat Tv and videogames have because the only change we're doing, is having our eyes strained to read words. In Tv and videogames, are eyes strain to look at the screen.

One question I have for you though, is how do you think "Feed" and "Everything bad is good for you" try to portray the same message, or had something incommon? I said that both authors had it down when we couldn't understand something complex, so we have something digitaly explained to us. Check my blog for that one if you'd like.

Overall I enjoyed your post, and the similarities between videogame simulations helping you at driving school. I look foward to more blogs you post about this arguement of how digital technology is good for us.

Yurelis,

I agree with you entirely that "Feed" can be considered a mirror under Bert Brehct quote "Art is not a Mirror with which to reflect the World. It is a Hammer with which to shape it." becuase in feed the parables and allegories explained and described very much of teenage life. In "Feed" it mocked the clothing trends and hair style trends but all together at the very end when Valarie dies, how do you think this was an allegory or parable to reality?

You also stated that "Feed" could be a hammer. I can't say I agree with you because even though I read this book, I feel that nothing has really changed, im just aware of digital technology use, but I still use it. I'd like to hear back from you, why you think "Feed" should also be considered a hammer, and what change/difference the book as a whole has made in teenagers, and what the most important change/difference "Feed" had that would make a difference?

I think you have some really great points in your blog post, but if you expanded on your thoughts, I think it would become a stronger indepth statement on what you bring across in your post.

Hw-14 Short excerpt

In "Telivision", Steven Johnson brought up good points about how digital technology is good for us. He explained how Tv shows complexity that began in the 80's have helped us understand even more complex shows present day. Mostly he talked about multithreading which is how Tv shows with complex narritive stories kept people watching, and Tv shows with single-plot narrative stories held viewers for a short while.

I agree with Johnson's point of how we can better understand multithreading in complex narritive shows and stories because of our exposure to shows such as "Hill Street Blues" that began the 80's of complex narrative plots to keep viewers tuned in. At the beginning though, many people in the 80's complained about how "Hill Street" was to complicated but they still tuned in, and because of that, Johnson explains, we can now understand even more complex shows such as the famous "Sapranoes" which made Hill Street Blues look like Three's Company according to Steven Johnson.

One thing I thought was interesting was how his graph showed a calculated complexity of a certain show, For example, "Hill Street Blues" had many scattered plots, which indeed it did because of multiple plots in had in one episode, and "Dragnet" which had a single-plot narritive story, which was plotted on the graph as a straight line.

In "Everything bad is good for you", Steven Johnson contradicts "Feed" because in "Feed" the mesaage I felt the author was conveying was that because of digital technology we would become lazy and if we went to against, we would die( in this case Valarie was the one who rebeled and slowly died). "Everything bad is good for you", thats the total opposite, he praises that digital technology has made us better, for example the constant exposure to multithreading in tv shows helping us understand complex narritive story plots.

One thing Johnson didn't contradict in "Feed: was definately the fact of people not capable of understanding complexity in shows, so we have it pointed out. For example, the movie "Student Bodies" a parody about horror/slasher flicks that almost have similar plots like a girl that leaves the front door open after checking if anyone was outside, the murderer comes in. Very common. But in this film, they have a big arrow pointing out every little plot and reasoning helping the viewer understand. Just like in "Feed" when they didn't know a word, or a person, they looked it up on the "Feed database."

I found "Everything bad is good for you" interesting because so many of us agree that digital technology is bad for us, because of "this and that and some of this" but Johnson argued that not many of us would argue, that digital technology is good for us.

Hw 13- Feed B

"Feed's" allegory was significant because it illustrated the dependence on technology that, we as people, crave. And because we crave it, we are oblivious to daily life attributions and we stick with our one way digital motion "our fingers on keyboards."

I think "Feed's" allegory was showing individuality in one's realization of fighting against the technology, but tragecally ending in death. Tobin showed this by using Valerie as the person to come to her sences and finding out that "feed" had no purpose but only to make things worse, ironically killing her in the end. From this, I believe the message Tobin conveyed was even if we did go back and not use advance technology, we would be left back in a fast-pace generation.

"Art is not a mirror with which to reflect the world. It is a hammer with which to shape it."-Bert Brecht
I believe that "Feed" is a mirror that reflects and even foreshadows because of the parables and allegories that are similar to reality. I don't think "Feed" is a hammer that can shape our current life even though it works as a peace of art because in order for this book to be considered a hammer, drastic change has to be made to modern life decreasing human interaction with technology that our society thrives and depends on.

Hw 12-Feed A

Feed is an allegory to modern day teen society because of the authors use of language and trends. The language used in feed are similar because of the catch phrases the author uses in myriad situations. For example, when they were going to a party, they wanted to get "weasel-faced"and "malfunctioned" and I thought the language the author used are similar to modern teenage phrases like "lets get shit-faced and high." The author also came close to the similarities in trends that teenagers most likely follow. For example the clothing brand Rogers and crotch was so similar to Abercrombie and Fitch.

The "Feed" in the story creatively I think showed how much we rely on internet sources as our reference to the world. In "Feed" the teenagers used the "feed" to chat, define words they didn't know, or as one would say, Under the influence things such as going mal or weasel-faced. I also thought it was significant to show how depedent we are on the internet because in "Feed", the teens "feed chips" crashed and they had no idea on what to do and they felt bored and lost. In reality, I think our society would do the same becuase we wouldn't have phones and social networks to connect us with other people.

One thing that I found very much in common between "Feed" and reality are the gossips that get past around when they "m-chat" and when we text our friends or come to to school the following day to gossip about and put in our own opinion on it. "Feed" I think altogether hits the nail on the head with allegories and parables between reailty and the book, but one thing I don't completely understand are the Lesions the characters get? And how they get them?

Informal research internet.

http://www.noahbrier.com/archives/2007/08/what_do_you_think_of_facebook.php
I think the most interesting part about this blog Noah Brier made was about the trend of social networking services that rise and fall due to the loss of context/control.

I agree that because of how many friends we have in reality that use social networking sites get us hooked to it, and it builds when we get that special "friend request" because t does feel like you build a certain popularity.

http://www.streetdirectory.com/travel_guide/126553/gaming/what_do_you_think_about_video_game_violence.html

The most interesting topics covered about the video game industry this site talked about were the addiction and controversy games bring to reality. In their blog they mentioned popular selling games that had a lot of controversy thrown at it such as, Mortal Combat, Grand theft auto, and Manhunt, etc.

I agree that the video games are distracting to the younger ages, but people should be aware that your child can pick up the similar media from watching tv or just being outside aswell. But yeah video games are for the worst.

http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-123833.html

This blog was interesting because it didn't tell me what Tv is like presently and was like historically. It asked me what I think of it futuristically. I had a wide variety of answers of how cool tv would be in the future, but the site gave me some insight on how Tv is being better made to make the consumer amazed.

I agree in the blog that Microsoft, should come out with their brand new futuristic ideal Tv that can make everything easier all the way up to not having to own a REMOTE CONTROL! Can you believe that? No remote control, but you can still flip through channels. CRAZY. But this also made me think that how much more lazier can our generation get, and then I compared myself to that disney movie, Wall-E, and i can just imagine now, "Fat, tired, high speed chair go-ers." not bad.

Video project 1

What are some thoughts and feelings you have when watching your own video?

I feel that my mind is focused on what is put infront of me until i'm finally distracted by the surrounding environment.

When you think about living your physical experience being largely what is shown on the video, how does that seem to you?

Would you want your little sister (or future son) to spend a lot of time doing this stuff?

I would let them be on the computer, video games, etc. but in a moderate fashion becuase of how addicting and distracting it is.

What do you think of the contrast between what's happening ON the digital representation device and what you look like interacting with the DRD?
What do you think of ideas like the Wii that are supposed to make this contrast less stark? Its smart but still bullshit. we're still facing digital representation devices but only now, we can exercise with it.

Digital technology

In this Digital technology age, we become pixels and new people. Facebook, World of Warcraft, twitter, etc. we are given the opportunity to become a new person. But then what does the mean about our real lives? which one would we radther choose? Which one are we most comfortable in? So what I'm asking is, which world do you choose, Planet Earth, or Planet Cyborg?
I think most people would be, "ofcourse Planet Earth" But I think where do you spend most of your time? I sit next to the computer and Tv probably most of my day. Planet Cyborg would be my kind of planet.
I forget her name but in ym class she brought up a interesting question of "How our future would look like since some many of us 'LOVE' texting, we would have big ass thumbs."
I agree, would our next generation become entirely new people becuase of our use of digital technology.
